		<description>

Shot over Lockdown in Lymington, New Forest, May 2020.

Narrated by Tessa Anne Sharman

We have been given the gift of time.

Once, this omnipresent over-ruling invisible instructor over our everyday lives

now has become more obvious and apparent in our existence.

We now take ten steps back to notice the everyday,

appreciating all that is around us,

and have time for time itself.

Once, our lives were so non-stop and fast-paced,

And we were oblivious to the continuous rhythm of the of the everyday ticking clock.

Let us remember this point in the passing of another decade,

When we were able to rewind, relax, release and reset

as the whole world slowed down,

and we were able to get back the precious gift of time.

Pourquoi London is presented in a space which is an antithesis to the white cube. Rather than being displayed in visual isolation against plain white walls, the artworks are placed into conversation with the history of the building and by extension, the historical context of London more broadly.

Pourquoi London is not just an exhibition, it is an exploration of the evolving language of art and an invitation to engage with the narratives that resonate with contemporary living artists. The London art scene has faced significant challenges in recent years and the impact of various global crises has been strongly felt by artists and galleries alike. The city increasingly needs to defend its place in the global art world, and the artists exhibited here help to highlight what it means to be an artist working in London today.

The exhibition is curated by Will Jarvis (CEO of Gertrude) and Louise Chignac (co-founder of Canopy Collections). It will feature over thirty artists including Francesca Anfossi, Anna Blom, Bokani, Richard J. Butler, Thomas Cameron, Helen Clarke, William Cobbing, Lara Davies, James Dearlove, Juliet Ferguson Rose, Abi Freckleton, Iris Garagnoux, Harriet Gillett, Emmet Kierans, Charlotte Kingsnorth, Jon Kipps, Hannah Knox, Sarah Lederman, Ranny Macdonald, Dominic Myatt, Tamsin Nagel, Jack Otway, Rebecca Parkin, Sarah Poots, Emerson Pullman, Leon Scott-Engel, William Stein, Emma Tod, Ian Whittlesea, Kate Williams, Aethan Wills and Salomé Wu.

Massey presents the viewer with isolated objects depicted in a soft realism, rendered in oil under an even light. Images are presented in relation to each other, two per work, a painted object depicted beside its partner to form a visual echo.

Her previous works and exhibitions have engaged the codes and history of queer culture, along with markers of selfhood and Northern identity. As suggested by the show title, borrowed from Auden’s poem ‘The Age of Anxiety’, these new works derive from feelings of tension and stress felt by the artist in recent months. Massey cites society’s persistent, habitual reminder that female + female = incorrect, that existence outside of the approval and verification of the male gaze is inappropriate. Her recent fertility journey with her partner has brought this into sharp focus, and this process is alluded to in the title of each piece, named as they are after the potential sperm donors they have considered. This additional layer encourages the viewer to see the sexual imagery through a reproductive lens.

Piers employs imitation and, at times, backhanded homage as a means of questioning power structures. He frequently references other artists' work and the wider art world with a wry smile, highlighting its relationship to belief. The constant devouring and humorous regurgitation of art history suggests at once a cock of the head; a questioning reverence coupled with a natural suspicion. He says, 'It’s not so dissimilar to what cavemen did. I paint the beasts I depend on for survival’.

Piers constantly probes at the concept of truth, questioning both religion and art, both of which create frameworks for doubt as well as faith . Never short of humour, the paintings manage these more philosophical dimensions with a light touch, as if to recognise the vanity of such pursuits.

<description>EVERY IDEA IS A USEFUL IDEA

“Work on as many ideas as you can. Even the weak ones will act as a springboard into a new way of thinking. Don’t edit yourself, let the ideas flow out. Use ideas as a pathway, let them act as signal markers on your path to a great idea.”

A national poster campaign by Anthony Burrill made in collaboration with buildhollywood to communicate an encouraging, uplifting sentiment.
